St. Bernardino Realino was born in 1530 in Carpi, Italy. He initially pursued a career in law and civic administration, earning a degree in civil and canon law and serving as a magistrate. Despite his success, his life changed dramatically when he met members of the Society of Jesus. Drawn by their zeal and humility, he entered the Jesuits at age 34. As a priest, he was sent to Lecce in southern Italy, where he spent over 40 years as a tireless missionary, confessor, teacher, and spiritual director. Known for his deep devotion to the Eucharist, his gentle manner, and his wisdom, St. Bernardino became a beloved figure in Lecce. He was often seen walking through the streets to visit the sick, teach children, and bring peace to troubled souls. He died in 1616, and many in Lecce immediately considered him a saint. He was canonized in 1947.
