TV, Film, and Broadway actress Kristin Chenoweth is, to say the least, feeling conflicted after her legion of gay fans roasted her for expressing sympathy when Charlie Kirk was brutally assassinated right in front of his wife and daughter.
In the wake of Kirk’s brutal Sept. 10 assassination, Chenoweth expressed her sorrow that Kirk — with whom she said she disagreed — was shot down in cold blood in front of the whole nation. But many of her fans ripped her to pieces for showing such compassion.
On Thursday, Chenoweth addressed the attacks she has suffered in the wake of her humane reaction to Kirk’s murder in an interview with NY1’s Frank DiLella, who asked her about the backlash she faced on social media.
DiLella called the reaction “mixed,” but Chenoweth ruefully replied, “Mixed? You’re being kind,” PageSix reported
The reporter went on to ask what she wanted to convey with her “heartbreak” over Kirk’s senseless murder.
“I saw what happened online with my own eyes and I had a human moment of reflection right then,” she replied.
But she added that the backlash shocked her, saying, “I came to understand that my comment hurt some folks, and that hurt me so badly. I would never.”
“It’s no secret that I’m a Christian, that I’m a person of faith,” Chenoweth continued. “It’s also no secret that I am an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and for some, that doesn’t go together. But for me, it always has and it always will.”
Gay fans were outraged when Chenoweth called Kirk’s murder a “sad, senseless, and disgusting act.” And they blasted her for writing on Instagram, “What a heartbreak. His young family. I know where he is now. Heaven. But still.”
However, she specifically noted that she did not “always agree but appreciated some perspectives” that Kirk relayed in his appearances on campuses across America and his podcasts and radio shows.
