The U.S. Supreme Court handed President Trump a huge win today, ruling that ICE can continue to engage in illegal immigration raids in Los Angeles.
The liberal justices on the court disagreed, naturally, but the dissent from Justice Sonia Sotomayor is remarkable because it doesn’t even sound like something a judge would say. It sounds like the words of an activist.
Rather than interpreting the law, which is supposed to be her real job, Sotomayor expresses her desire for the way she thinks things should be.
NBC News reported:
Supreme Court lifts limits on roving immigration patrols in Los Angeles area
The Supreme Court on Monday blocked a federal judge’s ruling that restricted federal officers’ ability to conduct immigration stops in the Los Angeles area, prompting a harsh rebuke from liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
The decision to grant an emergency request filed by the Trump administration puts on hold the July 11 ruling by Los Angeles-based U.S. District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong.
Attorney General Pam Bondi welcomed the decision, saying on X that it means immigration enforcement agents “can continue carrying out roving patrols in California without judicial micromanagement.”
Sotomayor, the first Hispanic to serve on the court, was joined in dissent by the court’s two other liberals.
“We should not have to live in a country where the Government can seize anyone who looks Latino, speaks Spanish, and appears to work a low wage job. Rather than stand idly by while our constitutional freedoms are lost, I dissent,” she wrote.
Conservatives on Twitter/X blasted the dissent.
Once again, Sotomayor has no idea what her actual job is.
It’s not to pontificate on wants. It’s to interpret the law. That’s it. https://t.co/B3c4l3qAAt

“We should not have to” is not a legal argument, it’s a policy argument.
The question is whether the Constitution permits something. Bad policy is the realm of electoral consequences, not judicial. https://t.co/sP6LBeUs7f

The Supreme Court is not The View. Sotomayor is a better fit for The View. She might actually make more money. Please resign and join The View. https://t.co/rYkAwERxIA

But the government isn’t seizing anyone who looks Latino, speaks Spanish, and appears to work a low wage job.
They’re seizing illegal immigrants who have been identified and have a deportation order. https://t.co/52ovefILIv

She would fit right in as a host on ‘The View’ wouldn’t she?
