Erin Morley, the soprano from Utah, gave a recital at the Park Avenue Armory. She was accompanied by Gerald Martin Moore, the pianist (and opera authority) from Scotland. They gave a program of songs about flowers (which affords one a broad repertoire, as composers, and poets, have been writing about flowers for ages). I present one or two of these songs in my latest episode of Music for a While.
Yunchan Lim, the phenomenal young pianist from South Korea, played the Goldberg Variations (Bach) in Carnegie Hall. We hear a little of the Goldbergs too (starting with the aria, as the work itself does).
The Metropolitan Opera has just staged The Queen of Spades, a Tchaikovsky opera. Tchaikovsky includes a couple of all-time arias in that opera. Did you ever hear Dmitri Hvorostovsky, the late baritone, sing Prince Yeletsky’s Aria? It was an experience. Fortunately, he recorded the aria several times. (There is nothing like live, but a recording can be a satisfying substitute, very.)
I end the new episode with some Shostakovich (for piano) and some Bach (a siciliano from a flute sonata, arranged for piano). Again, for this program of songs, arias, etc., go here.
