The 19 Martyrs of Gorkum

The 19 Martyrs of Gorkum were a group of Dutch Catholic clergy and religious who were executed in 1572 during the Protestant Reformation. Captured by militant Calvinists in the town of Gorkum, these men included Franciscans, diocesan priests, Norbertines, a Dominican, and a canon regular. They were imprisoned and tortured for refusing to deny key Catholic doctrines—especially belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist and the authority of the pope. Despite promises of release if they renounced these teachings, all 19 stood firm in their faith. On July 9, 1572, they were hanged in a turfshed in Brielle. Their martyrdom is a powerful testament to unity, courage, and fidelity to the Catholic Church. They were canonized by Pope Pius IX in 1867.

2. Know What You Believe: The Martyrs died defending core teachings of the Church. Take time to learn what the Church teaches—especially about the Eucharist—so you can explain it clearly to others and live it out meaningfully.
3. Support Fellow Believers: The 19 Martyrs encouraged one another in prison and went to their deaths together. Build strong friendships with fellow Catholics—whether through small groups, parish involvement, or simple conversations—so you can support each other in living the faith.
