On July 1, 2025, President Donald Trump visited the grand opening of “Alligator Alcatraz,” a controversial migrant detention facility in Florida’s Everglades. During a press conference, Trump was questioned about why former DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas had not been arrested for his role in the border crisis. Initially, Trump suggested a pardon might protect Mayorkas, but upon learning no pardon was issued, he directed current DHS Secretary Kristi Noem to “look into” arresting him, stating, “What he did was beyond incompetence.”
Mayorkas, who served under Biden from 2021 to 2025, oversaw a border policy that allowed over 10 million migrant encounters, including 1.5 million “gotaways” who evaded capture. House Republicans impeached him in 2024 for misleading Congress and failing to enforce immigration laws, though the Senate took no action. His tenure was marked by relaxed enforcement, mass releases, and inaction on border security, fueling a crisis of drugs, crime, and unaccounted-for migrants.
Congress must act swiftly to investigate and arrest Mayorkas. His deliberate neglect of national security, as evidenced by his refusal to advocate for border reform or reinstate effective policies like the Migrant Protection Protocols, constitutes a betrayal of his oath. The American people demand accountability, not excuses. House Republicans’ prior impeachment efforts were a start, but symbolic gestures are insufficient.
With Trump’s renewed focus on border security, Congress has a mandate to probe Mayorkas’ actions thoroughly. His failure to protect the nation from an unprecedented influx of illegal immigration cannot go unpunished.
