St. John Francis Regis, SJ

Born on St. John Francis Regis, S.J. was born in 1597 in southern France. He entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) at age 18 and was ordained a priest in 1630. Though he hoped to be sent on foreign missions, he was assigned to rural France—an area deeply affected by the Wars of Religion and spiritual neglect. There, he spent his life preaching, hearing confessions, and caring for the poor and marginalized. He walked from village to village, often in harsh weather, ministering to those forgotten by society, including orphans, outcasts, and women rescued from prostitution. Known for his humility, tireless work ethic, and fearless preaching, he renewed the faith of entire regions. He died in 1640 while preparing to preach, worn out from his labors, and was canonized in 1737.

Practical Lessons:

  1. Do Good Right Where You Are: St. John Francis Regis wanted to be a missionary abroad but accepted God’s will to serve locally. If you’re in a job, town, or situation that feels “small,” look around and serve faithfully—you may be right where you’re needed most.
  2. Walk Toward the Margins: Regis made time for the neglected—especially the poor, the sick, and those trapped in cycles of sin. In modern life, this might mean reaching out to someone who’s isolated, volunteering at a shelter, or checking in on a struggling friend or coworker.
  3. Speak with Courage and Compassion: Regis preached boldly but always with love. Whether in a tough conversation with a loved one or standing up for what’s right at work or school, his example encourages us to speak truth kindly and clearly.

Prayer:

St. John Francis Regis, tireless servant of the poor and messenger of God’s mercy, pray for us. Help us to be faithful where we are, courageous in truth, and generous with those in need. May we, like you, bring hope to the forgotten and love to those who feel unworthy. Intercede for us, that we may follow Christ more closely each day. Amen.

Quote:

“The most abandoned souls are those most loved by the Heart of Jesus.” — St. John Francis Regis
