St. William of York was born in the early 12th century into a noble family in England. Known for his humility and holiness, he was appointed Archbishop of York around 1140, despite political rivalries and opposition from powerful factions. His initial election was challenged, and he was removed from office, spending years in exile. During this time, he did not retaliate or complain, but lived quietly in prayer and service. Eventually, he was restored to his position as Archbishop through peaceful means. William devoted himself to the spiritual care of his people, promoted liturgical worship, and worked for unity within the Church. His kindness and gentleness won many hearts, and he remained faithful to his mission despite political pressures. He died suddenly in 1154 and was canonized in 1227.
